About Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS)

Founded in 1912, ACICS ( is the largest national accrediting organization of degree granting institutions. We accredit institutions that offer programs in professional, technical, and occupational fields. ACICS is one of two national accreditors recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

While the Doctor of Business Administration ( DBA ) is approved through ACICS, the U. S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation only recognize ACICS’ scope of accreditation through the Master’s degree level.

ACICS currently accredits more than 680 institutions throughout the United States and more than a dozen foreign countries enrolling approximately 650,000 students. ACICS is a not for profit organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia with offices maintained in the District of Columbia.

What does accreditation mean to you, the Student?

If someone asked you if the institution you are taking a distance study course from is accredited, what would you say? What does accreditation mean to you as a student?

Accreditation is a process that gives public recognition to institutions that meet certain standards. It is a promise that an institution will provide the quality of education it claims to offer. Accreditation assures the student that the institution operates on a sound financial basis, has an approved program of study, qualified instructors, adequate facilities and equipment, and approved recruitment and admissions policies.
